1956

In 1956, the U.S. Population reached 166.7 Million on January 1. 1956 was the year the British gave up the Suez Canal. Two Liners the Swedish Stockholm and the Italian Andrea Doria collided off Nantucket leaving 50 dead or missing. 1,652 were rescued! Elvis performed Heartbreak Hotel, Don't be Cruel, and Blue Suede Shoes on Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town show.

There were crack downs on the growing amusement of "panty raids" where rowdy collegians would appear en mass at dorms and collect underwear. 58 were expelled at the University of Kansas for such an activity! It was the final season of I love Lucy. Chet Huntley and David Brinkley began a 14 year association as anchors of the NBC Nightly News.

Grace Kelly wed Prince Rainer II, Arthur Miller married Marilyn Monroe. Peyton Place first appeared in print. The Yankee's and the Dodgers met in the world series. Rocky Marciano retired undefeated. Guys and Dolls was king at the box office. And young master Patrick Thomas Galligan came into the world at 6:39 p.m.!

1956 what a year!
